Why 'Clicking' with Your Doula Matters
Hiring a doula in Belfast isn’t like booking a photographer or a wedding caterer. This is someone who will be by your side through one of the most powerful and vulnerable experiences of your life. Whether you're planning a hospital birth, homebirth, or something in between, it's natural to wonder: what if we don’t click? In this blog, I’ll walk you through how to know if I’m the right doula for you, and why feeling emotionally safe and really understood matters just as much as practical support.
So it's okay to wonder and ask yourself, "What if we don't click?" It's not only okay, it's also wise.
What Makes Every Doula Different
Every doula brings something unique and different to this sacred work. Some are calm and quiet, some are bubbly and energising, some are deeply spiritual and holistic, and some are science and evidence-based. For most doulas, our initial doula training is just the beginning. There is plenty of specialised trainings on offer to doulas, including biomechanics, birth trauma processing, nutrition, pregnancy yoga and much more. Some of these extras may be more suitable for you and your circumstances. This blog talks about how to choose a doula.
When we meet for a clarity call, I'm not just listening to what you're saying; I'm listening for what you need, and asking myself if I'm the right doula to support your individual requirements.
What Happens on a Clarity Call
When we meet for a clarity call, I'm not just listening to what you're saying; I'm listening for what you need, and asking myself if I'm the right doula to support your individual requirements.
Sometimes the connection is instant, sometimes you need to sleep on it, and sometimes I lovingly suggest another doula if I believe someone else may serve you better.
I also encourage the dads to join in on the call, as we will be working closely together too. I was in a situation where the mum was open to homebirth, and when I met the dad, he was quite adamant that homebirth was a no-go. I think he thought I was all for homebirths (which I am) and was going to be pushing for this type of birth. I listened to his concerns, talked with both of them about their options and left the decision with them. The hostility melted, as he realised I wasn't there to push for a certain type of birth, but there for his wife and him.
Birth Should Feel Safe, and so Should Your Support
Before your labour even begins, we'll have time to connect and build our relationship. We'll talk through your hopes and preferences; your fears and concerns. We'll laugh. We may cry. But you'll know it feels right, and safe.
You don't have to know everything about birth, or psychology, to know how you feel with someone. If you feel warm, held, grounded, safe, that's the 'click' you're looking for. If you would like to learn more about me, you can read more here.

Doula Podcast Recommendation
I'm a huge fan of podcasts, especially birth-y ones! Melanie Jackson from The Great Birth Rebellion has just aired a fantastic show with Poppy Child about What is a doula and why should I get one? Here's the link if you want to listen: Listen to the podcast.
